Ethiopian Deaf Experiene

Last week we had a very exciting workshop with the Ethiopia Deaf Experience project. There was a mixed group of participants, tourists and locals.

Participants were very eager to learn about Ethiopian deaf culture.

As always the workshop was very interactive and we indulged in various games. Through these games they learned different signs, for instance how to order a drink or how to spell your name. Attendees learned the signs for different countries around the world and got to ask as many questions as they wanted about what it is like to be deaf in Ethiopia. Our professionally trained deaf actors were very open to talk about what it was like to attend a hearing or deaf school, build personal relationships, experience discrimination and how they are trying to make a difference in Ethiopia by raising awareness about deafness.

Not everyone at the workshop had a language in common and yet we had a very informative and fun gathering. This is the beauty of the Ethiopia Deaf Experience. People learn how to use their non verbal communication skills and get over language barriers in a creative way.

Thankyou everybody for attending and a special thanks to our lovely deaf actors!
